Biography
With a fierce commitment to transforming the world through music, the young American soprano Kavita Baliga has sung in concerts around the U.S., Switzerland, Italy, and India with repertoire ranging from Opera and Oratorio, Musical Theatre to Indian film.
The classically trained singer earned her undergraduate degree from The University of California at Irvine, and graduate degree in vocal performance from The Boston Conservatory. She has trained under renowned artists such as Elizabeth Pehlivanian, Robin Buck, Anita Mixson and Sara Goldstein. Her honors and awards include winning 1st place in the Youth Focus competition of California and 1st place in the Satya Devi Memorial Trust competition. Her Western performances include playing ‘Juliette’ from Romeo et Juliette by Gounod, ‘Zerlina’ in Don Giovanni by Mozart, Emcee in The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler, and soloing in Britten’s cantata St. Nicolas in Boston. Her work in India has included singing in scores for films such as Yuvraaj, Ghajini, and Blue, by A.R. Rahman. She is most known for singing ‘Aria’ and ‘Lux Aeterna’ from the film Passage, directed by Shekhar Kapur with music by A.R. Rahman. The film premiered as an accompaniment to a sculpture exhibition at the Swarovski Kristallwelten museum in Austria.
Ms. Baliga has had the privilege of working with artists such as A.R Rahman, ‘Guitar’ Prasanna, Benny Dayal, and Shankar Mahadevan. In 2008, Ms. Baliga joined A.R Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory as a faculty member and founded the KMMC Chamber Choir. In 2009, she was awarded the TEDIndia fellowship for being a musical pioneer and entrepreneur. She is presently developing performance programmes in India.
